GAO: DHS Has Yet to Reach Full Potential
(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Ranking Member of the House Committee on Homeland Security, released the following statement on the Government Accountability Office (GAO) report on the state of Homeland Security. The report, entitled "Department of Homeland Security: Progress Made and Work Remaining in Implementing Homeland Security Missions 10 Years after 9/11", illustrates that while DHS deserves commendation for implementing crucial and strategic programs it still has some operational gaps and weaknesses which must be addressed. The report was requested by Congressman Thompson along with Senators Joseph Lieberman (ID-CT) and Susan Collins (R-ME), Chairman and Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs.
"Since its formation in 2003, DHS has had the monumental task of consolidating 22 agencies while overseeing the nation's domestic security infrastructure. In the last eight years, the Department has made great strides and deserves much credit. However, we cannot ignore the fact that failed programs and missed deadlines continue to plague DHS."
"With impending budget cuts likely to affect every aspect of Federal activity, now is the time to ensure that known and current security vulnerabilities are addressed. While we must insist that the Department practice efficiency, economy and effectiveness, this Congress cannot skimp on the safety and security of the American people."
